There’s no better time than youth to familiarize your kid with the role that food plays in the world around them, and that is where the Ger-Nis Kids in the Kitchen Sustainable Food Camp can be your teen’s guide through the world of local, organic, fair-trade and sustainable food systems! We’ll bring our awareness of food to a global scale, talking about global cuisine and food culture while learning about the most important and essential kitchen tools while practicing the most useful techniques, from whisking, chopping, using proper knife skills while gaining experience with popular cooking methods from baking to roasting. We’ll feast on Mediterranean fare, including chicken slouvaki, seasonal cucumber salad, fresh pita and more washed down with refreshing Middle Eastern herbal iced teas, learning about their culture as it pertains to food and geography! Teens will receive hands-on cooking instruction, geographical understanding of where foods come from as well as regional ingredients as well as enhanced muscle memory in the cooking department using essential tools and techniques. Food affects every step of our life experience, from the way we function as human beings; the way we understand and treat our earth and its inhabiting plants and animals; the way we relate within our community both on a local level as well as international level; and how we define what real food means!
