There’s no better time than youth to familiarize your kid with the role that food plays in the world around them, exposing them to the world of local, sustainable, organic and fair-trade foods. That is where the Ger-Nis Kids in the Kitchen Sustainable Food Camp steps in. We’ll show your teen how to prepare delicious baked goods both generally and using whole grains, focusing on how to make bread but also touching upon the sweeter side of baking, using the freshest ingredients available in season. We’ll talk a bit on whole grains, talking about different varieties most common to unusual; and why whole grains treat our bodies, minds and environment better than their processed counterparts. They’ll prepare a classic seasonal, local lunch using whole, fresh and local ingredients as well as the fresh bread they have baked in class, rounding out the meal with freshly baked homemade whole grain cookies! We’ll make mayonnaise from scratch using local, fresh eggs, cutting out the stabilizers and using fresh herbs as flavor enhancers. They’ll also get to make natural colas using seasonal fruit!
