This Mardi Gras come support our own creative kitchen leader, Nissa as she participates in the 2nd annual Gumbo Cook-Off at Jimmy’s No. 43, benefitting the Chefs for Marcellus and their anti fracking efforts. $20 lets you sample over a dozen gumbos from the city’s finest chefs and amateur competitors, including Ger-Nis’ own boss who won most creative gumbo with last year’s Gumbo Z’ Herbs Recipe she conjured up using locally grown greens and herbs. The Chefs for Marcellus organization, founded by Pastry Chef Heather Carlucci-Rodriguez and Chef Jimmy Carbone, as well as not-for-profit director Hilary Baum, is devoted to halting the extremely unsustainable practice of fracking—in which high-pressure liquid chemicals are used to extract natural gas from shale formations and gas wells—across the Marcellus shale region. The region spans New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Virginia. The fracking issue is one of the “hottest” environmental issues today and this one small step in raising money for their fight is an important one. The Chefs for Marcellus remind us of the importance of how we treat the land and water that our food is grown on and with. Fracking continues to infect and contaminate our local farming and water sources and we need all the help we can get in this good fight! So come join us and eat your way through helping this cause.
Last year’s winners were Chef Brendan Corr (Chelsea Pizzaria Co.) with best overall gumbo, Brent Sims (The Green Table) for most local ingredients usage, Nissa Pierson (Ger-Nis Culinary & Herb Center) for most creative gumbo, and Scott Gold (Shameless Carnivore) for best meat packed gumbo.
